Wood Products Technology (AAS)

If woodworking is your ultimate hands-on career, SUNY Morrisville’s Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree program in wood products technology is one of the finest in the country to help you begin building that path.

The program offers two options: finish carpentry, which provides you with woodworking and construction skills; or furniture production and business, which focuses on the business aspect of the industry and prepares you to work in furniture manufacturing or start your own business.

With either option, you’ll start by surveying the industry and being introduced to commercial cabinet-making equipment. You’ll learn wood properties and identification, manufacturing and grading at the sawmill and kiln drying of lumber, as well as the use of adhesives, finishes and wood laminates.

The finish carpentry track will also teach you electrical, plumbing and light framing, while the furniture production and business option will teach you accounting, marketing and human resources management.

You’ll learn in our fully-equipped, 14,000-square-foot Wood Center, featuring technologically advanced equipment such as a such as a CNC machine, top-of-the-line sawmill, dry kiln with state-of-the-art drying software, and a five-head molder with knife grinding equipment.

When you graduate, you can get right to work owning your own business or as a supervisor in the lumber, furniture or finish carpentry industry, including architectural millwork, high-ending woodworking, cabinet maker, construction and remodeling, wood engineer, or sales and marketing of industry products, supplies and machinery.

The program also allows you to transfer seamlessly to a bachelor’s degree geared toward management in the industry.
